Hah! I still have an ancient light switch that's totally silent! It has a sealed mercury tilt switch inside. Ooooo..... DEADLY!!! Not. But I can see why they stopped making these.
Bet it was expensive in it's day.

if you poke a light switch instead of smacking the wall as hard as you can you're living life wrong

brains are funny things... i was rewatching this and during the "ooh a spark" portion I faintly smelled ozone each time... like happened with my old ionizer that gave off visible sparks if touched
so my brain went "that bright thing makes this smell, so let's pretend we smell that"
It stopped when you stopped playing with the plug.

So to make sure that your switches continue to function normally, you need to use them normally.

Also when you break of an inductive load the voltage across will rise momentarily and the arch jump more easily.
The voltage across an inductor follows this equation v=L * di/dt which shows that the current through cant change instantaneously and therefore will compensate with higher voltage because of the large di/dt

wait... dont they switch polarity every 60hz?
"oscillations of alternating current (AC) in an electric power grid transmitted from a power .... As the 20th century continued, more power was produced at 60 Hz (North America)"... not 100-120. you were talking about 100-120volts...

On a 60Hz sine wave in one cycle it hits 0 twice before starting another cycle so his reversing 120 times per second is right

They should make all switches wireless, that way they wouldn't have to run thick mains wires to every device from the switch. Hmmm...

Back when I was 8 or so I used to put the switches in the half state because I enjoyed the crackling noise. The amount of life I needlessly ripped from the switches is unthinkable.
